Match Report - 28 Jan 2012, Ross High Rugby Football Club 1st XV beat North Berwick
NORTH BERWICK 10
ROSS HIGH 13
This fixture was always going to be a closely fought affair after the earlier game in the season where North Berwick just edged the game. North Berwick started the brighter of the two sides putting a lot of pressure on the High defence, however the backs tackled well with some great try saving tackles being made by Patterson and R. Hook. The home side managed a penalty after these early confrontations as High were penalised for hands in the ruck.
The referee made it very clear that he would not tolerate repeated infringements at the break down and as a result sin binned scrum half Barry Scott. Scott was unlucky as the Berwick side avoided any punishment at this point despite repeated incidents of foul play. During this period with 14 men the Tranent men coped well, even managing to exert some pressure of their own gaining territory right into the Berwick half.
However North Berwick capitalised on some penalties not long after opting for scrums close to the High line, eventually they fell over the line for a score which was converted. But this was all the scoring the home side did for the day. High stuck to the task and with Scott re entering the game the away team managed a penalty making the score 10-3 at the half.
In the second half it was all Ross High with Berwick trying to defend their lead. Props Donald Grant and Ross Watters put in big shifts proving the High scrum can be a weapon for the team. This allowed for sustained pressure on North Berwick, High eventually being rewarded with a penalty right in front of the posts which kicker Ryan Hook slotted away confidently. Straight from the restart High took the game to North Berwick once again, surging right up the pitch to within 5 yards of the line. What followed were a number of attacking scrums where High made numerous attempts to breach the home sides defence however the North Berwick defence was unyielding. It was not until after countless pick and drives from the forwards that Hooker James Bannerman crashed over the line to score a hard fought try which was converted by Hook.
The score now at 13-10 to Ross High, North Berwick desperately tried to save the game. But exceptional tackling from the High team denied Berwick the try, in particular flankers Hepburn and Docherty doing well to stifle play around the fringes. On the day High wanted the win more than North Berwick who did attack well at times. Standout performances from scrum half Barry Scott and Kevin Brogan standing in at captain for Bruce Stoddart who was unavailable.
Another great team performance from Ross High, a run of form which they will hope to continue going into next week’s game against Trinity.
