Match Report - 30 Aug 2008, Ross High Rugby Football Club 1st XV lost to LENZIE
Ross High’s initiation on their return to National Division 3 turned
out to be a tough encounter against a Lenzie XV who just missed out
promotion last season. The men from the West were a well organised
outfit who managed to close down any adventure Ross High attempted
in turn took their chances when they arose.
The first half was like sparring in a boxing bout with both teams
feeling the other out, with the two number 10’s swapping penalties.
Lenzie were first to convert but by half-time Ross stand-off had
equalled his opposite number in landing a brace each.
time: Ross High 6 - Lenzie 6
The 2nd half was decided by Lenzie’s better use of yellow card time.
The first of the yellow cards was shown to Lenzie No6 for taking out
Ross No8, Ryan Strachan, who was following up his kick ahead close to
the Lenzie line. Dean Jones landed the 3 points from the resultant
penalty, but there was a certain amount of feeling amongst the home
support that a penalty try could have been awarded. Ross resumed the
attack keeping Lenzie pinned in their 22 and the inevitable happened
when Ross scrum half spotted a gap and ran in the game’s first try
20 yards. Dean Jones duly converted.
Then it was Ross High’s turn for a yellow card when Chris McNeill was
sent to the sin bin for persistent handling on the ground. Lenzie
immediately seized the opportunity and used superior numbers to allow
their open side flanker to dive over from the base of a ruck. The try
was converted. With only two minutes of McNeill’s sin bin time to
Lenzie No10 sold a beautiful dummy and glided in between the posts to
touch down and follow up with the conversion, giving Lenzie a 4 point
Ross put in a terrific effort for the last 8 minutes but a
of good Lenzie defence and a lack of penetration meant Ross High had
settle for the solitary bonus point.
