Match Report - 31 Oct 2009, Ross High Rugby Football Club 1st XV lost to G.H.K
Ross High RFC 10 v GHK RFC 18
Ross High kicked off down the slope and immediately put GHK under siege. A series of forward drives kept the visitors hemmed in their 22 but, unfortunately for Ross, produced no points . To compound the frustration, Dean Jones uncharacteristically missed a couple of penalty attempts, all be it one was from half way and the effect of a strong cross wind making life difficult for the kicker.
On virtually their first foray into Ross High territory GHK scored.
The ball was moved slickly from the mid-field out right with some inter- passing which eventually led to a score in the corner. The wind drifted the left footed kick wide of the posts.
Ross resumed the attack and piled on the pressure which reaped the reward of a successful penalty by Jones.. The pressure was maintained by Ross High and they could feel a bit hard done to, when the referee ruled out what looked like an excellent try by lock Bruce Stoddart.
The official claimed to be unsighted and looked towards the touch judge for assistance before deciding the ball had been held up.
However High were not to be denied and on the half hour mark, scrum half David Hughes, following up an attack slipped through several tackling attempts to score in the corner. It was almost a repeat of the previous scoring attempt with the official looking to the touch judge again, as to whether the ball was grounded before the corner flag was hit. The score was given and Jones used the wind to curve in a difficult conversion. It has to be said that in no way did the GHK touch judge influence the two decisions Half time : 10 - 5
GHK, now kicking down the slope, Came snapping at the Tranent side’s
22 and within five minutes put themselves in the lead with a more than
slightly dubious try. Again the referee found himself in the wrong
position to see the double movement of over two feet made by the GHK scorer. The try was converted.
The game, though fiercely contested, produced no more tries only a penalty for GHK. The visitors managed to keep RHS in their own half for the most part and any time the home team made a break into opponents territory, they seemed to get isolated , resulting in a penalty against for holding on. Added to this a lot of ball was kicked away along with possession. So the half fizzled out with neither team looking like changing the score line.
For the home team Adam Hook put in a tower of work especially in defence where he put in some smashing tackles. In the forwards , captain Steven Ketchin was aggressive going forward and flanker Justin Savala had some great tackles and supported well.
