NORTH BERWICK 39
ROSS HIGH 5
In perfect conditions for running rugby, it only took 3 minutes for the first score with winger Graeme Fairgrieve finishing off a swift move from the backs. Craig Lauder converted from the touch line to earn the full 7 points. The home team kept up the pressure and with the Ingles brothers to the fore in a sustained attack on the visitor’s line. Unfortunately Lauder went off injured after only 15 minutes but this allowed Grant Craig to come off the bench and take over at stand off, Peter Littlefair moving to the wing. There were increasing doubts about the Ross defence after Captain Jamie Dove took a good catch from a drop out and made an impressive break up field resulting in a try from Bhrian Buchanan which Grant Craig converted. There was a considerable delay after Ross’s flanker Justin Savala was injured. On the resumption of play the town tried too many kicks ahead but only secured two successful penalties from Grant Craig. Ross High were hardly in the home team’s half and constant pressure told when scrum half Grant Spence made a decisive break down the centre of the pitch to put winger Fairgrieve in the corner for his second try. Craig narrowly missed the conversion to end the half with North Berwick 22-00 ahead.
The visitors came out for the second half revitalised and the town gave away too many penalties trying to stem wave after wave of attack. Ross High were rewarded with a score in the corner. They continued to have all the ball, pinning North Berwick back in their own 22 in a complete reversal of roles. Their defence held out however and from nowhere Danny Waldman scored the try of the game; taking the ball near his own line and running the length of the pitch to score under the posts. Craig converted and guaranteed the bonus point. At this point the local supporters welcomed back Adam Macnair after a long recuperation from injury and he immediately made an impact with his robust tackling.
Ross High turned down an easy 3 points by kicking to the corner but were made to rue their decision when the town were able to clear their lines and take the play up field. Craig executed a deft chip ahead, which bounced into the welcome hand of Waldman who gladly went over for his second try, which went unconverted. Then in the last play of the game Craig demonstrated his skills with a great pass for Littlefair to score in the corner to secure a solid performance with a 39 -5 victory.
