Match Report - 08 Sep 2007, Ross High Rugby Football Club 2nd XV beat LASSWADE
Ross High travelled to Dalkeith to take on Lasswade 2nd XV. The home
side only lost the league on points difference and were unbeaten against
their opponents in more than 2 years so it was a tall order for Ross
High to get anything from the game. Lasswade had also won an earlier pre
season friendly 12 – 3.
Ross High started strongly with Strachan taking the kick off and making
good yards. After a few phases of play, Ross got the ball wide and Chris
Miller went on an audacious run to open the scoring. Patterson added the
2 points via the post.
After the early score, Lasswade came back and showed some of the
determination that took them close to the title last time round but the
visitors defence managed to rebuff whatever was thrown at it.
Ross High earned a penalty on the 22 and the Captain chose to kick for
posts to further the lead but unfortunately Craig Patterson just nudged
it left of the posts. Shortly after that however, Chris Miller managed
to double his personal tally and extend the visitors lead to 12-0.
The visitors were dealt a blow as within 5 minutes of eachother, Peters
and Cribbes were substituted with injuries and replaced with Malcolm and
Ross High however continued to turn the screw and started to look more
assured in the back division after some early frailties. They managed to
work their way into the Lasswade 22 and after poor control at the base
of the home side’s scrum, the ball popped out and Miller was on hand to
seal his hat-trick. Patterson added the 2 to leave the half time score
at 0 – 19
The second half was a much more subdued affair with both teams
cancelling eachother out for large periods. The only real action of note
was a well deserved solo try from Cunningham who used his pace to round
the defence and finish from inside his own half. Patterson added the 2
to leave the final score at Lasswade 0 – 26 Ross High
It was another assured performance from a Ross High side that finished
second from bottom last season. They have already equalled their total
number of wins from the last campaign so we will be in buoyant mood as
they welcome Grangemouth to Tranent next week as they aim to hold on to
their position amongst the top sides in the division.
