Match Report - 01 Dec 2007, Ross High Rugby Football Club 2nd XV lost to LASSWADE
Ross High welcomed a strong Lasswade side to Tranent as the visitors looked to avenge the 28 – 0 reversal earlier in the season. The home side looked a reasonably strong side with the return of Steven Herron to the back row and Lock Dave Welsh however they were dealt a double blow with the late call up of Pete Cribbes to the 1st XV and Captain Craig Johnstone had to withdraw through injury.
Ross High started the stronger of the two sides albeit playing up hill and against the wind but they were to be hit early with a sucker punch as Lasswade opened the scoring with an early penalty.
The visitors were to add to their lead with a quick fire score shortly after to leave the home side facing a struggle to contain the visitors. The home side appeared to be stuck in first gear as the onslaught kept coming although Sam Hood won a lot of their lineout ball to prevent a few attacks. This was to prove only a deferment of the inevitable as Lasswade added to their score by scoring from a driving maul.
In an uneventful first half, Lasswade added a further 2 scores after stretching the home defence to take a derived half time lead of 27 – 0.
Although the half time score was 27 – 0, Ross High were not deterred and they came out all guns blazing in the second period with some good tight play in the forwards particularly from Welsh. This lead to a series of penalties and eventually Craig Patterson got the scoreboard ticking by adding the 3 points.
The second half fired up after that with the Lasswade flanker hitting Craig Patterson late and this resulted in Craig having to leave the field. After that, tempers faired again as Welsh was involved an incident with a visiting player as Ross High attacked their line.
Ross High continued to show their dominance and some good runs from Simpson and Duff showed how the visitors defence could be opened up. The younger Ross High pack were now starting to come into the game and this lead to a well worked try and Dave Welsh carried into a ruck and some quick ball led to Cribbes and Peters exploiting a 2 on 1 on the blind side to add to the young hookers impressive start to the season.
Ross High were under the cosh for the last 10 minutes but some resolute defence kept the visitors out and the final whistle sounded as appropriately Savala held up the Lasswade Number 8 over the line.
This was a fiery contest at times but a good contest at that. Dave Welsh’s determination drove the pack on well and Simpson was the pick of the backs with his solid defence and good angles. Ross High Travel to Grangemouth next week to try and put an end to their 7 game losing streak.
