Match Report - 20 Sep 2008, Ross High Rugby Football Club 1st XV drew with WAYSIDERS DRUMPELLIER
Ross High brought their run of 3 consecutive defeats to an end on Saturday with a hard fought draw in Coatbridge. The return of Captain Dean Jones to the starting line up was a boost but the Tranent side were without several first team regulars due to injury.
The first half saw a more battling performance from the Tranent men as they were determined to kick start their league campaign. In the early exchanges the match came to life with the somewhat controversial sin binning of Ryan Strachan. Waysiders made the advantage count as they opened the scoring with a try under the posts shortly afterwards but the conversion was missed. Ross High rallied with good breaks from Strachan and Stevenson as they grew in confidence. Then Ross were dealt a blow as scrumhalf Duff had to leave the field injured. Indiscipline then cost the home side as Jones added 6 points in as many minutes. The referee was the centre of attention again as the yellow card count was levelled to leave the home side with 14 players approaching half time. This disadvantage did not hinder them however as they ran in a score on the left wing to give them a half time advantage of 12 – 6.
Ross started the second half in more positive fashion with Henderson in particular defending well. There was an early exchange of penalties in the second half as Jones’ boot kept his side in the match. Then yet another indiscretion from the home side lead to Jones cutting the deficit to 3 points.
The game exploded into life in the final few minutes as Bannerman saw yellow in his own 22. Waysiders kicking was inconstant so they chose to run the resulting penalty but Full Back Davis intercepted a slack pass to run 90 metres on the heavy pitch and go under the posts, Jones reliable kicking extended the lead to 3 points as the match entered stoppage time. The end was to be a bit bitter sweet for the East Lothian men as the home side slotted a penalty to maintain their unbeaten record and the match ended 22-22.
