Thanks should also be said to the very generous people who donated to our funds !!
Final Thanks to Tracy Scott and the management team at Somerfield for allowing us to use their store.

08 Dec 2007 : Ross High RFC 46 - 15 Penicuik RFC
Ross High RFC 1st XV Match Report
Saturday 8th December 2007

Ross High RFC 46 – 15 Penicuik RFC

Ross High continued their recovery with their 8th win in a row and secured another bonus point, keeping them within three points of league leaders Hawick Linden.

Ross took the field in fine form and started running up the slight slope and into the wind. Michael Patterson secured the first points, with his usual direct and strong running. This was quickly followed by his second after a loose pass went to ground and was superbly picked up on the run giving Jones a second chance to kick the extra points. Jones did and brought the score to 12 – 0. You could be forgiven, if at this point it seemed like Ross were going to have it all their way, but Penicuik dug in and tried to use the wind to clear their lines. Ross kept the running rugby going and Jones kicking was again brought to the fore when he cross field kicked for young Sydney Davis to pick up and scamper his way across the line. Again, the Ross forwards dominated Penicuik at the breakdown and turned over a number of possessions, giving Captain Hutchison space and time to make a fine break and score his own try. The wind picked up towards the end of the 1st half which meant more work for McDonald, McCrann and Davis but they contained each kick and set up good attacking options for the Ross team.

Jones fine kicking from hand was rewarded with his own try and conversion.

The second half brought with it the slope and wind for Ross but also a determined Penicuik resurgence. They started to run back at Ross with two notable runs from the right wing, both providing tries for Penicuik. Ross replied with a try from Coach Paris and try and penalty from Jones.

Penicuik were to have the last word with another fine score, bringing the score to a respectable 46 – 15.

Ross High has a match in hand over league leaders Hawick Linden and have them to play on Saturday 12th January. They also have shown great tenacity in their early defeats picking up 2 bonus points and scoring a bonus point in every victory. President Scott Glynn must be happy with the returning crowds and subsequent busy clubhouse.

Ross High Maintain 100% Home Record

Ross High put in an impressive 1st half performance to put Gala YM to the sword at Tranent playing fields. The final score of 73-10 reflects the superiority that Ross had over there Border opponents. Both sides went in to the match with a number of injury concerns. Ross High in particular had a number of injuries to key players in the pack.

The game started of well with Ross High breaking the YM line on number of occasions, particularly in the midfield. This allowed the Ross to get into their stride and begin to offload the ball out of the tackle. The 1st half saw Ross High build an impressive 48-5 score line through tries by Michael Patterson, Chris McNeill, Jamie Evans, Bob Baillie and Greg Torley. Dean Jones managed to kick 2 penalties and a number of conversions in an impressive kicking display. Gala managed a solitary score in the first half through a quick tap move, which created an overlap on the short side.

The second half had Ross High playing against the wind. This meant they struggled to gain the territory they required to build in the score line from the 1st half. At times they were guilty of trying to play too much rugby and forcing the game too much. However, further tries from Chris McNeill, Jamie Evans, Bob Baillie and tries from Paul Davis, Dean Jones and Ryan Strachan sealed the win.

Assistant Coach, and Ross High Stalwart, Mark Urwin said, “As a coaching team we were particularly impressed with the performance of some of our younger fringe players. Particular credit must go to young Ryan Strachan’s performance in the lineout who commanded that area like an experienced forward. We are now looking to get some consistency in our performances and build on our impressive home record this season.”

Ross High’s next game is in the league away to Broughton.

22 Oct 2007 : Sat 20th Oct - 1st XV - Ross High RFC 41 - 15 North Berwick RFC
Ross High RFC 41 – 15 North Berwick RFC
Saturday saw the return of North Berwick Rugby to Tranent after a few years absence. The local derby match took on a bit more significance with Ross looking to keep their home 100% league record intact and North Berwick looking to build on their performance from the previous week.
Ross took an early lead from a North Berwick infringement when Robin Veitch awarded Ross a penalty. Dean Jones put it over and took the first 3 points of the match. Not to be outdone North Berwick brought the game all square with a penalty of their own.
The 20min mark came and Ross decided to make some substitutions, including Henderson for Welsh and “Taz” McNeill for Strachan. The change proved crucial when “Taz” pounced on a loose ball, beat two defenders and scored the first of the day, Jones dutifully converted.
With Welsh returning to the paddock he showed great strength and helped by his pack bulldozed over for another Ross try, again Jones stepped up and knocked the ball over for the extra two points.
North Berwick weren’t down and out yet and managed to pull back two tries, one in particular will be a thorn in the Ross Coach's side. A poor Ross lineout led to a break away by North Berwick, Paris was left flat footed and North Berwick romped in for a score.
The break arrived and Ross pulled the show together with a determined performance.
With “Taz” claiming his second; Jones added a further conversion and penalty to his personal haul. A much improved performance from the 10.
Michael Patterson not to be out done by the forwards scorched down the wing, was tackled close to the line but still managing to reach and claim his own try, taken his seasons tally to 10.
In the dying minutes Ross made a number of substitutions, Glen Cunningham got in on the act and scored a good team try on the left wing, Dean Jones finished off a perfect kicking show with the final conversion.
Ross can be happy with the way they controlled the game. North Berwick are a good side and played excellent rugby, but found it hard to get into their rhythm at the Ross High Playing Fields.
Ross can look forward to home advantage for their 2nd Round Scottish Cup tie against Gala YM on Saturday 28th Oct.

18 Sep 2007 : Ross High RFC 1st XV So Far
The Rugby Season has Started.
After what can only be described as the last pass the first league match against Hawick Quins in Hawick fnished 9 - 7 to the Quins.

The took an early lead with a drop goal, but Ross fired back with agreat try and conversion.

Ross dominated most if not all the match only conceding a penalty, but it proved vital to Quins.

Ross again and again made inroads but lost out in the final mins to a 2nd Quin penalty and lost the match.

Ross may walk away with abonus point for lsing within 7 pointd, but they must rue at least 4 tries that wnet begging because of the last pass.

The 2nd league match against Leith Accies was a non affair with them callng off on the Saturday morning. They could not rasie a team and were deducted 4 league points for the effort, and told to replay the match in Jan 5th.

The 3rd league match was alays going to be good. Ross had prepared well and had hd 2 great weeks practice behind them.

From a superb start the match was always one way, with Ross scoring 14 tris, including 4 from Baillie and 4 from Pattie.

The final score was 84 to nil, with the nil proving to be the most popular part of the core line for a lot of Ross players and supporters. Especially when you think of some of the results in the recent past.

Penicul RFC on Saturday 22nd Sept, a hard game at Peniculk, especially when they have not lost at home for 2 years. Hopefully the Ross will be up to the challenge.
